Back at it.

Timelapse of harvesting corn

2013-9-29
It rained yesterday afternoon, just enough to stop harvest. We were actually happy to see the rain, both to replenish the subsoil moisture, and to soak up the soybeans while the stems mature a bit more. Today was a relaxing day while we wait for everything to dry out again.

Mmm, corn.

We have caught up to the ripe soybeans, so we decided to sample the corn.

The wind was just slightly faster than the speed of the combine, so if you were going with the wind, visibility was bad. After running blind for a while, it's nice to cut a field a different direction so the dust is blown sideways. Still taking a lot of power to thresh, but the beans are running 11-12% mositure.

More dusty Soybeans

Harvest has started. There are still a lot of green stems in the soybeans, but the pods are dry, and there is dust to stir up.

What is this strange substance on the ground? Is that mud?

I've heard that harvest has started in the area, but I haven't seen it myself yet.

Some dirt has eroded from this field into the ditch, which covered up some drainage tile outlets. The drought we're in allowed us to get in there and re-shape the ditch without it being a muddy mess. I brought the ATV out with a GPS receiver to get some elevations and make sure we have fall everywhere.

I think we'll be picking corn in 3 weeks. Still dry here with no rain in sight. We broke the record for lease precip in the month of August this year - only received 0.11" all month. Today's high temperature was only 78°F, which felt great, but we'll be back to 90°F in a few days. Some of the soybeans are starting to turn yellow, some are just turning brown and defoliating.
