August turned out to be much wetter than normal, and the temperatures all summer have been cooler than normal. The soybeans have been suffering from a number of issues in isolated areas - too wet, white mold, sudden death, or the Japanese beetles. The corn appears to be doing quite well, but is loosing its color, and some of the early soybeans are starting to turn yellow in a few places. It will be interesting to see what the yields look like.

So much for being dry - 2 inches of rain today.

It hasn't rained here in about 2 weeks now, and the soybeans are starting to look thirsty. The aphids have also started to feed on the soybeans in a few fields, so the sprayer has been out dealing with that. Surprisingly, the Japanese beetle population has been quite low this year.

We had a family reunion this weekend, so we got some of the iron out for our urban relatives to inspect.
Also of note, if you look in the background of these pictures, at the horizon, you will see our local ADM processing facility. The two tall stacks are chimneys for their power plant (yes, they have their own coal fired power plant). To the right of that you will see 5 cement silos. Those are 250K bushels each, and that is the site of their new ethanol plant, which is supposed to come online sometime this winter. Once that is up, the entire facility will consume something like 750K bushels of corn per day.
