It rained over an inch early this morning so we didn't send anything to Regent today like we had planned. The 9250 was loaded on a trailer after it helped pull the trailer out of the mud.

We finished up the wheat yesterday and began the moving process today. All the combines came back to Harrold where we washed the trucks and loaded some of the combines for the trip to Regent.

We washed all the pickups this morning and then went to the river this afternoon. The forecast looks good for the next few day so we should be able to finish up here.

We cut another 500 acres today, but rain moved in again this evening. I doubt we will be able to cut anything tomorrow.

2004-7-28
We had a bit more rain overnight plus the wheat isn't completely ripe in the low ground. We went to Pierre for the afternoon and I was able to update this site at the library. Since the peas are done, the 8010 was moved back to the wheat fields. A couple of the guys saw a CaseIH STX 450 Quadtrack running a 60' 13" auger. Apparently the story is that there is usually a 4020 for that job, but that tractor is being used to mow and the STX is the only other tractor with a PTO.

We cut probably 400 acres this afternoon before some light rain moved in.

Sampled the spring wheat today and its too wet. Its a good drying day, so maybe tomorrow...

In the past few days, we cut several hundred acres of spring wheat and then finished up the winter wheat. The spring wheat looks great and has a yield close to that of the winter wheat. We have been cutting the wheat with the 8 2388s, and the 8010 has been cutting some peas. Last night we were able to see the northern lights, which is an incredible sight to see.

We are almost done with the winter wheat, but an evening storm shut us down before we could finish the last field. It was an incredible light show, but it came with a price, hail.

2004-7-18
We have been cutting a lot of acres in the past couple days. The experimental 2388 showed up today so now we are cutting with 9 machines. Things are getting interesting with the logistics of trucking that much grain.
2004-7-17
The 8010 showed up today. It is an awesome machine, but just doesn't have the capacity we all expected. We started cutting this evening about 5:00 and got around 250 acres done.

2004-7-16
Today we moved the combines east to the next group of fields. The sample was too wet, no cutting today.

2004-7-15
In the last 2 days, we have cut about 1500 acres of winter wheat. It rained early this morning and then the day ended up being hot and humid. We serviced the combines so we are ready to cut when the wheat dries out again. The 30' draper head showed up for the 8010 that will arrive in a few days. The 8010 is currently in Highmore after a recent trip up from Arizona.

We went out to the field and took a sample. What was cut was almost dry enough to keep cutting, but that was one of the drier parts of the field. We'll call it a day and get moving tomorrow. There is a new 36' MacDon flex header at the case dealer being assembled for the extra 2388 that should be showing up soon. There is also an extra 8010 coming sometime.
2004-7-11
Another hot day with a storm about dusk. We made some repairs to the combines so they are ready to go when we can get back to cutting. It was looking like we could cut tomorrow, but it probably rained at the field tonight.

2004-7-10
It was the warmest day we have seen here yet with a high somewhere in the mid 90s and bright sunshine. We took all the trucks out to the farm after lunch and Shawn took a sample of wheat just to see where it is for moisture. It was dry enough to cut so we took the combines out. We got about 100 acres done before a storm moved in bringing strong winds and rain.

2004-7-9
In the combines, it was about an hour drive out to the farm. We checked the first field to cut and it is still not ripe. We are guessing at early next week if we have several warm and windy days.

It was a good day for drying. We washed and waxed the 1040 grain cart and changed oil on all the trucks.

2004-7-6
It was not raining today, but still cool outside. We changed oil on 3 combines, waxed some trucks, and checked air on all the tires. I know we still have some chains to change, but we finished up most of our maintenance today. The waiting game continues.

The rodeo and fireworks were great. After a long morning of sleeping in, we found it to be a rain day. We went to Pierre again today for shopping and to get outside of the trailers for a while. As for now, its back to playing poker. If tomorrow is a nice day, we have some combines and trucks to change oil on.

This morning we unloaded three combines and put them in line with the rest. After lunch we took a tour of the fields to cut, which included a look at the 1500 acre field. The terrain has some hills that will be a challenge to cut on, then add to that a bunch of rocks. The wheat looks beautiful. Most of what we cut will not be hauled to an elevator, but rather to a bin site owned by the farmer. There are something like 20 15,000 bushel bins and they will be filled with a couple 13 inch augers. Cell phone service is pretty much non-existent around here, unless you crawl up a grain bin. Tonight we will be going to a rodeo and fireworks in Pierre.

2004-7-3
We got an early start on the day and covered about 400 miles to get into SD. We are staying in the town of Harrold, but will be cutting about 20 miles south of here. As of now, it sounds like the wheat is about a week away from being ripe.
